Living Room with Large Windows and Green Sofa

Keeping your home in great shape requires more than being neat and tidy. If you’re living in a space that won’t wear out anytime soon, there’s no need to consider upkeep and maintenance. Sadly, as time passes and things break or chip or get dirty, you have to start thinking about how to keep your house in peak condition. Thankfully, with some work and the right attitude, even the smallest homes can remain fresh and clean all year round. If you’ve just moved into a new home or feel like yours could do with an overhaul, read on for helpful home maintenance tips that will help keep your house in great shape and looking good at all times of the year.

Repair what's broken

While you might want to ignore a broken light switch or a faulty door lock, repairing these things as soon as possible is necessary. If you ignore things that are broken, they’re likely to break down further, which can cause significant damage. For example, while a light switch might seem small and easy to replace, it could cause a fire if faulty due to overloading. You might also end up paying more to have an electrician fix your light switch than it would cost to buy a new one. Repairing a door lock before it breaks entirely is also a major must.

If you’re renting, you should always inform your landlord – they might be able to fix the issue for you; otherwise, you might be held liable for the damage caused.  Finally, if the worst happens and essential parts of your home have been damaged that wasn’t your fault, you should act immediately to avoid paying massive amounts of money.  For example, suppose a break-in occurs, and you are left with a broken window. In that case, you should collect on the insurance - and if you are being refused compensation, consider contacting a property damage insurance lawyer to fight your case.

Maintain the floors

Keeping your floors clean is essential, and it’s crucial to maintain them, so they stay in good condition. Regularly sweeping your floors to remove debris like sand, hair, and dirt will extend their lifespan significantly. You should also be sure to vacuum your rugs regularly as this will help to remove allergens. To maintain hardwood floors, you should use a damp mop to clean them. For the best results, use warm water to clean your floors. Never use harsh chemicals to clean your floors, as these will wear them down over time, which will eventually cause them to break. If you have carpet, use a vacuum with a rotating brush to clean it.

Repainting and/or updating furniture

If your furniture is old or starting to look faded and worn, repainting it or covering it with a fresh new fabric is a great way to update it. For example, if your couch looks a bit tired, you can repaint it in a similar or contrasting color to make it look new again. Alternatively, you can cover it with a new fabric to give it a new look.  You should remember to update your furniture colors - and the color of your home in general - based on the mood you want your home to exude.  For example, if you want to make your home look and feel more relaxing, calming and soothing colors like soft shades of green can help create this atmosphere.

Furthermore, when updating your furniture, think about repainting wooden furniture.  If your coffee table or end tables look a bit dated or worn, consider repainting them or covering them with a fresh new fabric to give them a new lease of life. If your furniture is sturdy and sound but simply looks outdated, consider sanding and repainting it to give it a fresh new look. This is a great thing to do if you’ve recently moved into a new home and want to make it feel more like yours. If wooden furniture looks worn, you should oil it to protect it from further damage.

Update your light fittings

If your light fixtures look dated, there are a few ways to update them. For example, you can simply change the light bulbs to give your light fixtures a new look. If you have wall lights, you can easily change the shades to give them a fresh appearance. You can also paint your light fixtures or add decorations to them to give them a new appearance.  If you’re renting and aren’t allowed to make any changes to your light fixtures, you can always make some changes to how you use them. For example, if you have table lamps, use them in different ways to brighten up different areas of your home.

Swap out heavy curtains

Sure, curtains are brilliant for adding a bit of personality to a room. And they can even make a living area feel 10 times more luxurious. But they don’t often make your home feel fresh and new. So instead of diving straight for the heavy curtains, why not swap them out for Half Price Blinds? They do the same job as curtains, keeping the sun out or letting more light in, but they’re so much lighter in the room. You can install blinds so you barely notice they’re there (except for when you need them.) Giving your rooms the illusion of being much bigger and much newer.
